On November 10, at Marine Corps birthday celebrations around the world, the first slice of cake will be given to the oldest Marine present, who will then hand it off to the youngest Marine present, symbolizing the passing of knowledge from one generation of Marines to the next. In this photo, LtGen Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, then a colonel, cuts the Marine Corps birthday cake on November 10, 1950.
Many Marines celebrate the Marine Corps birthday in the days leading up to November 10th. Here, Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen James F. Amos cuts the cake during a Marine Corps birthday celebration at the Pentagon on November 8, 2011. A sword is used to cut the cake to remind Marines that they are committed to carrying the sword so that our nation may live in peace.
